Multiple Car Accidents Shut Down Treasure Coast

Recently, a series of car accidents up and down the Treasure Coast clogged the Florida Turnpike for hours in Martin and St. Lucie Counties. The delays on the Turnpike began early, where two car accidents stopped up traffic for almost six hours in the northbound lanes of Hobe Sound. Palm Beach County and St. Lucie County also had multiple accidents that day, closing down parts of the turnpike until around 7:00 p.m. that night.

The first accident in Martin County involved three vehicles at mile marker 124 around 12:30 p.m. on Friday. One of the vehicles was a big rig that was hauling a construction vehicle, and a tractor trailer collided with the rig on its right shoulder. This caused the trailer to separate into oncoming traffic, where a woman driving a Nissan swerved and overturned to avoid it. Two women inside of the Nissan and the tractor trailer driver suffered injuries and were taken to area hospitals.

At around 1:30 p.m. a compact car and a tractor trailer collided at the northbound 121 mile marker on the Turnpike. With traffic already stopped from the first accident, there were further delays when two people in the second accident needed to be air lifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Palm Beach. Several other people were taken by ambulance to area hospitals.

Then at 3:00 p.m. an accident blocked traffic in Palm Beach County in the northbound lanes near the Indiantown exit in Jupiter. Thankfully, no one was injured but it did cause further traffic delays. At the same time, two more cars stalled in St. Lucie County on the Turnpike while waiting in traffic. At 5:35 p.m. an accident blocked the right lane of the Turnpike in St. Lucie County at mile marker 170.

A second car accident occurred in the same county around 6:00 p.m. that blocked all of the southbound lanes at mile marker 171, most likely due to the distraction of the first car accident in the northbound lanes. One person involved with that accident was flown to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries. All lanes of traffic on both sides of the turnpike were eventually reopened around 7:00 p.m. that night.

As of now, no charges have been filed against any of the drivers in the accidents, and the Florida Highway Patrol has not commented as to whether drugs or alcohol played a role in any of the accidents on the Florida Turnpike that day.
