What to Know About Enfamil Baby Formula & the Risk of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC):

Parents, family members, and other caregivers should not have to worry that baby formula will be toxic for an infant. Unfortunately, severe health concerns have been raised about the Enfamil formula. One of the most popular baby formulas in the United States, Enfamil is manufactured and sold by Mead Johnson & Company, LLC, a subsidiary corporation of the British-based conglomerate Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC.

In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics published a study showing the adverse health effects of cow-based formulas for premature infants. Specifically, these formulas have been associated with the development of a potentially serious medical complication called necrotizing enterocolitis or NEC. KidsHealth describes NEC as a “serious intestinal disease” most common among premature infants. Necrotizing enterocolitis can result in severe intestinal tissue damage. It could lead to perforation of intestinal walls—causing life-alternating medical complications or even death.

Enfamil is one of several major baby formula brands on the market that has a cow milk base and has been shown to be potentially toxic for infants, especially those born prematurely. Major companies like Mead Johnson & Company, LLC are aware of the safety risk. However, no voluntary recall of Enfamil has been issued. Further, the company does not provide specialized warning labels regarding the enhanced risk for premature babies. Several toxic baby formula lawsuits have recently been filed against the corporation.
